Title:Unrecognized Poem

This piece, Unrecognized Poem, is a spinoff from an older piece by the same name (within the same series), commenting on land reclamation with a structure of traditional farming implements (hoes and conical hats) that presents unlimited possibilities of geometric combinations. These familiar symbols and the abstract design transmit the artists’ contemporary perspective of Hualien’s scenery.

Unrecognized Poem

Everything has been named,
and each is co-dependent.
Meaningless chatter can be turned into an instruction manual,
and memorial tablets are erected even for unscheduled meetings.

In the end, no poems are written,
and in the future, you won’t even recognize yourself.

Pakavulay

“Pakavulay,” which means “to make wonderful” in the Puyuma language, is the artistic duo of Huang Jin-cheng and Malay Makakaluwan. Their work consists of ready-mades, natural materials, and imagery of orally transmitted mythology from their tribe. They present the transmission of tribal culture and the potential for its re-creation, which is in turn used to express the modern plight of indigenous Taiwanese people. In 2012 and 2016, they respectively won the Grand Prize and the Merit Award at the Austronesian International Arts Awards.
