Malay Makakazuwan

Malay Makakazuwan  (1980 - )

卑南族人,出生於Pinaski(台東卑南鄉下賓朗),工作、生活於阿美族Cikasuan(花蓮吉安鄉)

Malay Makakazuwan (1980 - )

Pinuyumayan, born in Pinaski (Peinan Township, Taitung), work and live in Cikasuan (Jian Township, Hualien)

Malay Makakazuwan’s parents were first-generation urban Indigenous people who left their tribal community for work. Raised by her grandparents (mumu) alongside her younger brother in the Pinaski tribal village in Taitung, Taiwan, Malay grew up immersed in family and tribal memories. These experiences became a wellspring of inspiration and resilience in her artistic practice.

Artistic Practice >>
Malay primarily works with mixed media, incorporating found objects and natural materials through weaving techniques. Her creations draw from tribal legends and contemporary issues, exploring the possibilities of cultural preservation and innovation while highlighting the marginalized modern existence of Taiwan’s Indigenous peoples.

In 2012, < Search Before you see > poetically imagined the migration of early Austronesian ancestors, blending abstract forms of boats, seeds, and celestial orbits to depict a fantastical journey brimming with creative energy. Since 2018, Malay has used cardboard as a primary medium to underscore the social hierarchies linking materials, culture, and commodification. By recreating traditional woven backpacks, thatch, boundaries, and hearts, she conveys the tension and resilience of cultural continuity and change in containers across time. Works such as < maaya’ tu rakaz za ‘enay (Searching for the wellspring)>, < paseki na dingding (Snail on the Slope)>, and < Sarapung (The Place Where the Soul Belongs)> extend this concept.

In 2019, < Let the Heart Beat > featured a cardboard heart suspended in a shipping container, addressing the crisis of cultural vitality being eroded by commodified cultural products and the symbolic consumption trap faced by Indigenous artisans. In 2021, < wula i dalan ja (Tribe in Motion)> used vine-woven backpacks as installations and sculptures, reflecting on personal memories of home and broader tribal migrations—what remains and what is lost.

In 2024, < Muvalis (Transformer)>, created during a residency at Govett-Brewster Art Gallery/Len Lye Centre, New Zealand (Feb 19–Mar 5, 2023), extended the concepts of < wula i dalan ja (Tribe in Motion)>. Incorporating elements of the Puyuma tribe’s adult meeting house (Palakuwan), long bamboo thatch (Derederan), and totems, Malay explored tribal mythology and contemporary experiences through woven installations, audio recordings, and short films, seeking future possibilities rooted in ancestral origins.
